Though he associated with progressive artists (Gustave Courbet, Eugene Delacroix, Edouard Manet), he was a traditionalist best known for his portraits and still lifes with flowers. His portrait groups, reminiscent of 17th-century Dutch guild portraits, depict literary and artistic persons of the time; his flower paintings were especially popular in England, thanks to James McNeill Whistler and John Everett Millais, who found patrons to support him. Guillaume Voiriot
Guillaume Voiriot (Paris, 1713 - Paris, 30 November 1799) was a French portrait painter. In the years of 1746-1749 Voiriot went, at its own expense, to Italy. After his return he became a member of the painters and sculptors guild at Academie de Saint-Luc. In the years 1759 to 1771 he regularly exhibited portraits of his contemporaries in the Paris Salon. He portrayed family members, scientists, writers, actors and musicians.
Lorenzo Costa
1460-1535 Italian Lorenzo Costa Locations Italian painter of the Ferrarese and Bolognese schools. Trained in the manner of such painters as Tura and Cossa, he modified the strident Ferrarese style when he became a partner of Francia. Among his paintings are the Madonna and Child with the Bentivoglio Family and the Triumphs of Petrarch in San Giacomo Maggiore, the Madonna with Saints in San Petronio, and the Madonna in San Giovanni in Monte, all in Bologna. His Three Saints is in the Metropolitan Museum.
